We are Blas, Paula, and Adrián, an olive-growing family from the Cordoban countryside. We've been cultivating olive trees since 1993, and a few years ago, we opened the doors of our olive grove to visitors. That's why we know Córdoba and its surroundings so well: because we live here, because every week we talk to visitors from 25 different countries, and because when they ask us what to do near Córdoba beyond the Mosque and the patios, we can answer with authority.
If you've come to Córdoba for a few days, you probably already have the Mosque-Cathedral, the Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos, the Jewish Quarter, and the Roman Bridge on your list. That's good. But if you want to discover the other Córdoba, the one that doesn't appear in quick guides and that captivates those who dare to explore it, this article is for you.
We have selected 7 day trips less than 30 minutes from the center of Córdoba, all personally tested and approved by us, with practical tips to make the most of your visit.
Why leave the center of Córdoba?
Córdoba city is wonderful, but it's also intense. In summer, the streets of the historic center can reach 45 degrees Celsius, and the tourist hustle can overwhelm even those who come looking for precisely that.
Leaving the center for half a day offers three advantages you'll soon discover:
- Change of scenery: from the urban labyrinth, you move to the countryside, mountains, or white villages.
- Slow down: a rural Cordoban experience is enjoyed at a relaxed pace, something difficult when following a monumental itinerary.
- Get to know the real Córdoba: the one Cordobans live, not the one for souvenirs.
And best of all: you don't need to dedicate a whole day. Most of these plans can be done in half a day, allowing you to combine them with your city visit.
1. Medina Azahara: the Caliphate's palace-city
📍 Distance from the center: 8 km · 15 minutes by car
⏱️ Recommended duration: 3 hours
Let's start with the essential. Medina Azahara was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2018 and is, without a doubt, the most impressive archaeological site in Andalusia. Built in the 10th century by order of Caliph Abd al-Rahman III, it served as the capital of the Umayyad Caliphate in the West for barely 70 years.
What you'll see today are the ruins of a palace that was once the most sophisticated power center in Europe. Walking through its terraces, imagining the halls decorated with marble and gold, and understanding the magnitude of what happened there is an experience that changes the perspective of any trip to Córdoba.
Family tip: avoid the midday hours in summer. It's best to go first thing in the morning (opens at 9:00 AM). The visitor center is separate from the site; a shuttle bus takes you to the ruins. Don't forget to book tickets online during high season.
2. Visit to an organic olive grove and EVOO tasting at El Rinconcillo
📍 Distance from the center: 30 km · 25 minutes by car
⏱️ Recommended duration: 2 hours
And here, of course, we're talking about what we do. Not to sell it, but because we honestly believe that olive oil tourism is one of the most authentic experiences you can have near Córdoba, and because you won't find it in typical tourist circuits.
In our organic olive grove, you'll learn how olive trees are cultivated with respect for the environment (no chemicals, no herbicides, promoting biodiversity), you'll walk among olive trees that have seen three generations of our family grow, and you'll do a guided sensory tasting to truly understand what distinguishes a premium EVOO from the oil you usually find in the supermarket.
The tasting is accompanied by local products: artisan bread, local cheese, homemade cracked olives, and seasonal fruit. And at the end of the visit, if you wish, you can take home the oil you tasted.
Why it's different: we are real producers, not a tourism company. The tasting is led by Adrián, who grew up among olive trees. Our organic Picual EVOO was recognized with the Gran Mezquita 2024 award (97/100 points), one of the best oils in Spain.
Who it's ideal for: families with children (kids love the countryside and animals), couples looking for something different, gastronomy lovers, and curious people who want to understand why EVOO is one of Andalusia's great treasures.
📅 Bookings: the activity is booked in advance through our olive oil tourism page.
3. The Hermitages of Córdoba: silence in the mountains
📍 Distance from the center: 13 km · 20 minutes by car
⏱️ Recommended duration: 1-2 hours
If you're looking for a short but different plan, the Hermitages of Córdoba are a hidden gem right in the Sierra de Córdoba. It's a complex of 13 small hermitages, each with its own garden, where hermits lived for centuries in absolute silence and solitude.
Today, it's a place of spiritual retreat, but also a privileged viewpoint: from above, you can see all of Córdoba at your feet, with the Mosque standing out above the old town. The views at sunset are memorable.
It's a quiet, almost mystical place. No crowds, no souvenir shops. Just silence, nature, and views that alone justify the climb.
Family tip: combine it with a meal at a bar in the upper area or, even better, bring something to snack on and enjoy the views at your leisure. The winding road up is narrow but in good condition.
4. Almodóvar del Río and its legendary castle
📍 Distance from the center: 24 km · 25 minutes by car
⏱️ Recommended duration: half a day
Almodóvar del Río is one of the most photogenic villages in the province, and its castle, perched above the Guadalquivir river, is one of the most impressive sights you'll see in all of Andalusia. If it sounds familiar, it's because it served as a setting for several seasons of Game of Thrones (it was Highgarden and Casterly Rock).
But beyond its television fame, Almodóvar Castle has real historical value: it is one of the best-preserved medieval castles in Spain, with origins in the 8th century. Climbing its towers and contemplating the Guadalquivir valley from above is a worthwhile experience.
The town itself is also beautiful: white streets, a peaceful atmosphere, and a few restaurants where you can taste Cordoban gastronomy without the crowds of the city center.
Family tip: if you go in summer, avoid the midday hours. The castle doesn't have much shade, and the heat is intense. A good combination: morning at the castle, lunch in the village, and a siesta at one of the viewpoints by the river.
5. Hiking in the Sierra de Hornachuelos
📍 Distance from the center: 30 km · 30 minutes by car
⏱️ Recommended duration: half a day / full day
The Sierra de Hornachuelos Natural Park is one of Córdoba's great unknowns, and that's precisely why we recommend it. It's part of the Dehesas de Sierra Morena Biosphere Reserve and offers hiking trails for all levels, from gentle strolls to multi-hour treks.
The biodiversity is spectacular: black vultures, deer, wild boars, and, with luck (and a lot of silence), even Iberian lynxes live here. The Bembézar route, which follows a riverbed with natural pools, is one of the most spectacular and even allows swimming in summer.
Who it's ideal for: nature lovers, photographers, active families, and anyone who wants to disconnect from urban noise.
Family tip: bring water, closed-toe shoes, and, if you go in spring, binoculars. The tourist office at the Huerta del Rey Visitor Center can guide you on routes according to your level.
6. Arab baths in the heart of the countryside: a relaxing experience
📍 Distance from the center: 12 km · 20 minutes by car
⏱️ Recommended duration: 2 hours
If, after a day walking through the Mosque and the patios, you're looking to relax, the Arab baths are a perfect plan. In Córdoba city, there's the famous Hammam Al Ándalus, but there are alternatives on the outskirts with a less touristy and more intimate atmosphere, where you can enjoy the experience without the rush of a mass circuit.
The experience recreates the ancient Caliphate baths: rooms with warm, cold, and hot water, a steam room, and the option to add massages with essential oils. An hour and a half perfectly timed for you to enter tense and leave refreshed.
Family tip: book in advance, especially on weekends. And if you're interested in history, ask about guided tours of the Caliphate baths in the center of Córdoba (those of the Alcázar Califal, in the Campo Santo de los Mártires) before or after your session.
7. Montilla-Moriles winery: tasting in the land of Fino wine
📍 Distance from the center: 25 km · 30 minutes by car
⏱️ Recommended duration: 2-3 hours
Córdoba is not just olive oil. The Montilla-Moriles Designation of Origin produces some of Andalusia's most interesting fortified wines: finos, amontillados, olorosos, Pedro Ximénez. And although the Jerez denomination has more international fame, experts know that Montilla-Moriles wines have a unique personality.
Visiting a traditional winery, with its clay tinajas and criaderas, is to understand a fundamental part of Cordoban culture that has been somewhat overshadowed by olive oil. The tasting is usually accompanied by local products: salmorejo, flamenquín, cured cheese, Iberian ham.
Family tip: many wineries require advance booking. Some of the most recommended are Lagar Blanco, Bodegas Alvear (the oldest in Andalusia, founded in 1729), and Toro Albalá.
How to organize your day trips? Recommended combinations
Not all day trips can be done on the same day, but you can combine them to make the most of your time. Here are our favorite combinations depending on the visitor's profile:
For couples with a free day:
Morning in Medina Azahara + afternoon of olive oil tourism and EVOO tasting at El Rinconcillo. It's the perfect combination of culture and gastronomic experience.
For families with children:
Morning at Almodóvar del Río castle + afternoon at our olive grove (kids are amazed by the animals and olive trees). A full-day plan, with a change of pace between castles and the countryside.
For nature lovers:
Hiking in the morning in Sierra de Hornachuelos + visit to the olive grove in the afternoon. A day of countryside and total disconnection.
For those seeking tranquility:
The Hermitages in the morning + Arab baths in the afternoon. A day of retreat and absolute relaxation.
For foodies:
Visit to a Montilla-Moriles winery + visit to our olive grove. The perfect Andalusian pairing: wine and oil, the two pillars of the Mediterranean diet.
Frequently asked questions about what to do near Córdoba
Do you need a car for these day trips?
Honestly, yes. Most of these plans are in rural areas without regular public transport. Medina Azahara is the exception: there's a tourist bus that leaves from Córdoba city. For the rest, renting a car for a day (from around €30) will open up all possibilities.
Which plans are suitable for children?
Almost all of them. The most recommended experiences for families are our olive grove (children enjoy the countryside and the tasting is adapted for them with juices and suitable tastings), Almodóvar castle (they feel like they're in an adventure movie), and gentle hiking in Hornachuelos. The Hermitages and Arab baths are less recommended for small children.
What's the best time of year to do these day trips?
Spring (April-May) and autumn (October-November) are the ideal times in terms of temperature. Cordoban summer is very hot and requires adapting to early morning and late evening schedules. Winter is mild and very pleasant, with sunny days, although mornings can be cold in the countryside.
Can these plans be done in a single day from Seville or Malaga?
Yes, perfectly. Córdoba is 45 minutes by AVE from Seville and 1 hour from Malaga. Many visitors arrive by train in the morning, do one of these day trips (especially olive oil tourism, which fits very well in the afternoon) and return to their city at night.
What should I bring for a visit to the olive grove?
Closed, comfortable shoes (you'll be walking on dirt), a hat and sun protection in summer, and a light jacket in winter. Nothing technical is needed: our olive grove is completely accessible, and the visit is relaxed.
